Key Ideas and Thoughts. Competition Doesn’t Have To Mean Conflict – A Great Lesson form Jocko Willink
If nobody in your group can explain why are you doing something. Everybody will automatically think you are doing for yourself.
let’s imagine we are working inside the same company and you are moving in some direction and James moving towards some direction. As long as it moves the whole company forward as a leader I do not care.
Most of the time people are trying to meet their goals. As long as it is not undercutting the company’s strategic goals it’s perfect. You need to watch out when people have the agent that moves them but it’s not moving you towards your strategic direction.
Competition is always is zero-sum or plus sum.
Zero-sum – when two nations are competing on who is going to control the island.
Positive sum. More than one group is competing economically but they can see their domestic growth simultaneously.
You should watch out when people’s agenda moves them without moving you towards the strategic direction. When a person makes those maneuvers for him/herself everybody sees it.
If I am burning down right now my opponent and I am burning down him to the ground. Maybe it’s good in terms of the tactics, but it’s not a good thing in terms of a long-term strategy. In two years, in five years in ten years, he is coming back at me.
Always think in a long-term, strategic way.
Why do you really need to use strategic negotiations?
Almost always people are thinking what is the value right here and right now. In the long run, it can be a disaster. The business’s not a boxing match. In order to be successful. You need to work and cooperate with other people and companies. Strategically you can cut some corners right now but in the long run, you’ll lose this partner. Just evaluate how many efforts you need to do to bring a new client, a new partner, to build relationships.
